Overview

This section of this demonstration CD-ROM is designed to allow you to navigate through "Phonological Awareness," a sample CIRCLE teaching case. When teachers do professional development work online with Teachscape, their learning group leader will provide them with a step-by-step plan for using the teaching case resources. The learning group leader also will provide activities and discussion prompts to guide and support the learning.

We recommend you review the resources of this CD-ROM sequentially, starting at the top with this overview and working your way down through the resources in the left navigation bar. We have included sample discussions and activities for your review as well.

A complete CIRCLE teaching case includes several more elements than you see here. Some of the additional elements include:

  • The teacher's lesson plans
  • A glossary
  • Perspectives on English language learners, students with special needs, assessment, and classroom management issues
  • Standards
  • Transcripts
  • Recommended readings

When you open one of the teaching examples, please take a look in the folders that accompany the highlights. They offer a lot of additional information. The overall CIRCLE approach to online professional development embodies what research shows is most effective. This means that the teaching cases are:

  • Grounded in content knowledge
  • Rooted in the best available research
  • Focused on individual and collaborative examination of practice
  • Designed to encourage reflection
  • Focused on getting teachers to apply what they are learning in their classrooms

We hope you enjoy this teaching case.
