Course Description:
The course introduces students to experimental documentary practices. We analyze a variety of experimental forms (single channel and interactive film/video, installation, web based) and address the various ethical, formal and thematic concerns that inform contemporary thinking about non-fiction media.
Attention is also be given to the history of documentary, and the role technological innovation has played in the development of the field. Designed as a seminar, student participation is critical to the success of the class. In addition to viewing, reading and writing, students complete short, experimental projects in teams or individually over the course of the semester. Students are expected to make time for viewing some films outside of class, in addition to completing reading and writing assignments. Basic video production is a prerequisite for the class.
